Panelled Wood Set Within Cracked Plaster and Brick
A narrow wooden double door stands within a pale stone surround in this black and white photograph from Venice, Italy. I made the image in 2005 while walking through the city late at night. Raised panels, worn wood and exposed brick give the small entrance a wealth of surface detail.
I was drawn to the contrast between the door's ordered design and the irregular wall around it. Paired rectangular panels repeat down its height, with two small knobs near the middle. Above them, a barred opening adds a different grid. The stone frame keeps these shapes distinct from the cracked plaster and rough brick on either side.
I photographed the doorway almost straight on, leaving a strip of paving at the bottom to show where it meets the street. Dark marks descend across the upper wall, while missing plaster exposes a jagged horizontal band of brick. The monochrome treatment makes those changes in surface easier to follow, from the smoother surround to the coarse lower wall.
For me, the interest here is in how many textures occupy such a compact space. The door remains a strong central form, yet the surrounding damage prevents the composition from feeling too regular. It offers a close study of Venetian architecture beyond the city's larger views, suited to a hallway or room where quiet geometry and weathered surfaces can invite a slower look.
