Fine Grass Stems Beneath a Broad Florida Sky

Thin grass stems rise from a dense tangle of blades beneath a cloudy sky in this black and white photograph of the Florida Everglades. I made the image in 2006, concentrating on the grasses themselves rather than a distant landmark. The result is a nature print built around line, texture, and the space between them.

The lower part of the photograph is richly layered. Bright blades cross darker ones, some bending in broad arcs while others stand almost straight. There is no single stem that holds the composition together. My eye moves through the overlapping marks, finding little arrangements that appear briefly before disappearing into the surrounding growth.

Above that density, the taller stems become much easier to follow. Their fine curves cut across the lighter sky, with darker clouds gathering toward one side. I find this change from crowded detail to open space particularly compelling. The grasses carry the same energy through both areas, but the background changes how clearly each line can be seen.

Working in black and white brings those relationships forward. The photograph can be read as an Everglades landscape, then enjoyed more closely as a field of intersecting shapes. For me, its appeal lies in that ordinary abundance: a patch of tall grass becoming a surprisingly intricate subject when given the whole frame.
