Pale Curves Rise Above Strong Repeating Stair Lines
The broad steps lead towards a group of pale roof forms, each rising into the dark sky with a different curve. I photographed this close Sydney Opera House view in 2016 during my Australian travels. The building’s familiar outline is present, but the composition also gives the staircase a strong role, connecting the foreground directly to the architecture above.
I like how the steps gather into tight horizontal bands towards the right. On the left, another set of lines angles into the distance, creating a different route through the frame. These repeated straight edges provide a clear base for the much larger roof curves.
The pale surfaces show a fine tile pattern, while dark recesses beneath the roof forms add depth. Two sharply rising fronts stand near the centre, with a broader rounded form behind them. Black and white brings those changes of shape and tone forward, making the relationship between light surfaces and deep shadow particularly clear.
For me, the photograph holds the pleasure of looking at a well-known building through its immediate forms and proportions. The staircase, roof surfaces and shadowed openings become a closely connected arrangement. As a print, it offers an Australian architectural subject with strong lines and a clear sense of approach, suited to a wall display with an interest in Sydney, modern buildings and the graphic possibilities of black and white photography.
