Packed Shelves Beneath Branches Near the Tribunales Entrance
I photographed this bookselling scene while walking near Tribunales in Buenos Aires. The kiosks are packed with books from their lower shelves to the glazed displays above, and a folding table brings another row out toward the pavement. A seated man occupies the space beside the table, while another figure reaches toward the books on the right. I encountered the scene as it appears here; the arrangement of people and shelves was unstaged.
What drew me in was the amount of detail within a relatively small part of the street. Upright book spines make close vertical lines, interrupted by stacks laid flat and covers turned outward. The seated figure gives the lower half of the image a clear point of attention without hiding that texture. Across the right side, the reaching arm introduces a different gesture among the rectangular displays.
Above the kiosks, spreading branches cross pale building facades and the visible Subte sign. Their irregular lines contrast with the shelves below, connecting the bookselling space to its broader city setting. In black and white, the dark books and kiosk openings balance the brighter pavement, walls and leaves. I can move through those tonal changes without losing the two figures.
For a reading room or study, this print brings the subject of books into a lived street scene. It offers more than a still life of volumes: people, architecture and overhead branches share the composition. The vertical view gives those layers space, with the open pavement leading toward the booksellers.
