Abstract Cord Hood Louvres Black and White Photography
Diagonal Bands of Light Across a Sculpted Car Hood
A few diagonal lines can hold more of my attention than a complete view of a car. Here, the hood louvres of a Cord roadster become long bands of pale metal and deep shadow. I made this black and white photograph in 2013, concentrating on the way those repeated openings follow the bodywork. The close framing leaves the automobile suggested through its surfaces, with the rhythm of the design taking the leading role.
The lines enter near the upper left and spread towards the right and lower edges. Between them, the dark recesses give the bright strips definition, while a broader pale area provides room for the pattern to stand out. I chose this angle to bring the curve and the slotted vents together. Their repetition is orderly, but the changing widths and the turn of the surface keep it from becoming a flat pattern. Thin highlights along the edges give the metal a sharper presence against the softer grey areas.
I like the distance this creates between recognizing the subject and simply looking at its shape. Someone familiar with vintage cars may begin with the hood; someone else may first see an arrangement of diagonals. Both ways of looking belong to the photograph. Black and white keeps the focus on that balance of light, shadow and smooth contour. For me, the image is a close study of automotive design, where a small part of the car has enough structure to carry the whole composition.
