St. Regis Tower Chicago Black and White Photography
Chicago Skyscraper Rising Into Low Clouds and Mist
The top of the St. Regis Tower was already disappearing into the clouds when I found this view. Instead of waiting for the weather to clear, I liked what the mist was doing to the building. It removed the clean ending of the skyscraper and made the tower seem to continue upward into the sky.
I photographed the St. Regis Tower from a low angle, allowing its stacked volumes to dominate the frame. Each section steps upward differently, creating a strong architectural rhythm before the highest portion gradually fades into the cloud cover. The glass facade catches subtle variations in light while the darker vertical separations give the building its sense of depth and scale.
Black and white strengthened everything I found interesting about the scene. The building, clouds and sky begin to share the same narrow tonal range, while the harder geometric lines of the architecture push against the softer movement of the weather around it.
Chicago has no shortage of dramatic skyscrapers, but weather can completely change how I see even the most modern architecture. On a clear day, this would have been a study of glass, height and engineering. With the clouds moving across the tower, it became something less predictable.
That is what held my attention—the contrast between an enormous, precisely constructed building and weather that could partially erase it in a matter of moments.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
