Sierra Mountains Sunset Beneath Purple and Gold Clouds Photography
A Dark Ridge Below a Broadly Coloured Evening Sky
The brightest light stays close to the mountain tops. A narrow band of gold follows the Sierra ridge, while purple, grey and warm brown clouds occupy most of the sky. I wanted that difference in scale to remain clear: a long mountain outline below a much larger field of evening colour.
The clouds have their own structure. Some stretch in soft horizontal layers, while a pale sweep crosses the darker centre of the sky. Their changing tones keep the view active without needing a visible sun. Beneath them, the peaks rise and fall in a detailed line, with small pale patches and dark slopes still apparent rather than a completely empty silhouette.
The foreground is restrained, with low vegetation and rough ground forming a subdued strip below the mountains. I find that dark base useful because it lets the brighter horizon carry the transition between land and sky. The photograph has plenty of colour, but the landscape’s outline gives it a definite place and a clear shape.
I photographed this Sierra Mountains sunset in 2010. My attention was on the whole arrangement of clouds, ridge and low land rather than one isolated summit. It is a view for someone who enjoys mountain landscapes and evening skies with more than a single dominant colour. From a distance, the gold horizon is the strongest feature; closer looking reveals the softer purples and the many small changes along the mountain edge.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
