A Small Weathered Home Among Bare Winter Trees
Snow covers the roof and gathers around the base of this small home in rural Ontario. I photographed it in 2018, facing the building directly so its central door, two lower windows, and little upper opening form a clear arrangement. The black and white image keeps the worn facade distinct against the bright winter ground.
The house has a simple shape, but the details make it particular. Pale trim around the openings is uneven and weathered. The upper window sits within a short raised section of the roof, and a chimney rises near one side. I am drawn to the way those small changes interrupt the otherwise straightforward front of the building.
Behind it, bare branches create a fine vertical pattern. A denser evergreen on the left adds a darker area, balancing the lighter trunks and sky across the rest of the background. Snow softens the ground below, hiding much of what would be visible in another season. The house’s darker base seems to settle into that pale foreground.
I wanted the photograph to stay with the visible winter scene rather than tell an imagined story about the people who lived there. Its character comes from the building’s condition, the trees around it, and the contrast of snow against weathered surfaces. As a piece of rural Canadian photography, it offers a quiet architectural view with a strong shape and enough close detail to reward patient looking.
