Nested Rectangles Frame a Curved Sphere Above the Courtyard

Looking straight up from the Fuji TV Building courtyard in Tokyo’s Odaiba district, I found a frame of pale panels and windows surrounding its distinctive sphere. This black and white photograph follows that upward view. Rectangular structural openings step toward the centre, where the rounded metal surface interrupts the otherwise straight lines.

I moved slightly while composing, watching how the verticals and horizontals aligned. The outer edges bring windows close to the frame, while the inner openings reveal strips of cloudy sky. Those successive layers make the courtyard feel deeper than a simple view of one facade. The sphere sits off-centre within them, giving the eye a curved shape to follow after the repeated grid.

Soft light helped keep detail across the panels and glazing. On the sphere, smaller lines radiate around its curved underside, changing the scale of the pattern. I liked that contrast between large structural rectangles and finer surface divisions. Monochrome allowed both to remain clear without colour drawing attention away from the arrangement.

This is the sort of view that makes me look upward while wandering a city. From ground level, separate parts of a building can come together in a way I would not notice from farther away. Here, the courtyard organizes the sky into frames, then places a rounded form within them. I wanted the photograph to preserve that moment of discovering a composition already built into the architecture.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
