Marthas Vineyard Beach Rope Coastal Landscape Photography
Tangled Ship Line Below Warm Coloured Shore Cliffs
A tangle of rope lies at the foot of the cliffs, its loops spreading across the sand. That small piece of maritime life became my foreground for this Martha’s Vineyard photograph. Behind it, warm coloured slopes climb toward a blue sky crossed by patches of white cloud.
The rope gives the scene a very different texture from the ground around it. Its twisted strands and overlapping loops create a concentrated knot of detail, with several loose lengths reaching out across the beach. I like how that untidy arrangement sits beneath the larger diagonals of the cliff. The eye can begin at the rope, follow the slope upward and return to the pale sand without needing an open sea view. Ochre, cream and grey bands in the cliff add another layer of variation, while small patches of vegetation interrupt the exposed surfaces.
I photographed this washed up ship line in 2009. The attraction was the contrast between something made for use on the water and the natural shoreline where it had ended up. I do not need to know its earlier voyage to appreciate the scene in front of me. The rope’s weathered surface, the scattered stones and the changing colours of the cliff make a complete coastal subject together. It is a photograph for someone who enjoys the less polished details of a beach, where a familiar object can open a different way of looking at the landscape.
