A Small Head Breaks the Surface of Reflected Water
A seal’s head rises just above the water in this British Columbia photograph, with a thin wake extending behind it. I encountered the animal while exploring the coastline, and the image keeps its surroundings deliberately simple. Water fills the entire frame, leaving the seal as a small but clearly defined subject just right of centre. Its eye and rounded head remain visible within the narrow band of sharper surface detail.
The reflections above and below the animal are much softer, forming broad areas of grey with brighter vertical patches. Across the middle, smaller ripples create a finer horizontal texture. I enjoy how those differences guide attention toward the seal without requiring a large subject in the frame. The wake connects it to the right edge, while the open water on the left provides space in front of its direction of travel.
Black and white brings the scene into a restrained range of tones, from the darker reflected areas to the pale line around the animal’s head. My photograph concentrates on a brief visible moment at the surface rather than a broader coastal landscape. For someone interested in marine wildlife or quieter nature images, this print offers an understated subject with room around it. The small seal holds the view, but the water’s shifting textures remain part of what makes the photograph rewarding to look at.
