A Whiskered Seal Face Above Snow With Distant Ice Behind
A Weddell seal rests on snow-covered ice, its head turned towards the camera and its body stretching across the right side of the frame. I made this black and white photograph while travelling along the Antarctic Peninsula in 2011. Light snow and soft surroundings gave the scene a quiet atmosphere, with the seal’s face remaining the clearest point of detail.
The whiskers and dark muzzle draw the eye first. Around them, pale folds form a rounded face, while mottled markings continue along the neck and body. I kept those larger surfaces visible so the portrait would hold more than an expression. The animal’s broad shape settles into the snow, with gentle shadows separating it from the ground.
Behind the seal, a narrow dark band cuts between pale layers of ice. Farther formations remain soft, creating depth without competing with the foreground. The vertical frame gives those layers room above the animal and leaves a quieter area of snow below. Monochrome connects the scene through subtle greys, bringing the textured coat and granular snow into the same restrained palette.
I watched from a respectful distance before making the photograph, allowing the resting scene to determine its own pace. What I value in the image is that unhurried arrangement: a close whiskered face, a broad body on the ice and the larger polar setting still visible behind it. For someone drawn to Antarctic wildlife, the photograph offers a detailed seal portrait with space to explore the surrounding frozen landscape.
