Raised Sails Against the Bright Evening Sun
The sailboat crossed into the warm light during an August evening in 2012. I had spent many hours exploring the South Florida coast aboard my trawler, and this sunset remains one of the views attached to those days on the water. The raised sails and people on deck became dark shapes against a sky filled with orange and gold.
The sun appears between the sails, giving the centre of the photograph its brightest point. Cloud bands spread outward above the vessel, while the hull follows the level horizon below. Small passenger silhouettes add scale without becoming separate portraits. I like how the boat stays clearly defined even within such strong colour.
The foreground water has its own movement. Short ripples catch pieces of the sky’s light, forming a broken warm reflection beneath the vessel. Darker water near the edges helps hold that colour toward the middle. The contrast between the sharp sail shapes and the less orderly surface below gives the scene both structure and texture.
