Slug Bug Ranch Volkswagen Sculpture Black and White Photography
An Upturned Beetle Reveals Graffiti Across Its Underside
The nearest Volkswagen Beetle presents its underside to the sky. At Slug Bug Ranch in Texas, I moved close to this unusual roadside installation to photograph the exposed mechanical shapes, raised tires and layers of graffiti. In black and white, the cars become a group of weathered forms against a sky filled with streaked clouds.
I wanted more than a front view of the row. This angle gives the nearest vehicle a tall, almost upright presence, with its body narrowing toward the gravel below. The wheels and exposed parts near the top add a complicated outline. Across the underside, painted words and marks overlap the structure of the car itself.
Farther back, the other Beetles repeat the tilted shape at a smaller scale. Their windows, roofs and raised wheels remain recognizable, but each surface has its own pattern of paint. A small graffiti-covered sign stands beside the nearest car, while the path and gravel keep the scene grounded around these unexpected vertical objects.
The clouds were important to the frame. Their broad movement contrasts with the smaller, denser marks across the metal, giving the sculpture room above it. I was interested in how familiar vehicles could read so differently once their position and surfaces changed. The photograph keeps enough of the surrounding row to show the installation, while the close underside provides the detail that made me linger.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
