Pale Wooden Walls Beneath a Dark Sky and Sea Horizon
This wooden house stands against an open coastal horizon on Quebec’s Gaspé Peninsula. I photographed it in black and white, keeping the pale walls distinct beneath a much darker sky. The sea continues behind the building on both sides, giving the modest structure a setting that feels far larger than the house itself.
I was interested in the difference between its surfaces. The lower walls have narrow vertical boards with uneven pale patches, while the gable shows darker horizontal timber. Across the roof, small shingles make a fine repeated texture. A few light-framed windows interrupt the wood, with the dark doorway near the right balanced by the upper window at the left. The view gives me two sides of the house without losing the simplicity of its shape.
I remember the afternoon for the openness around the building. The grass spreads through the foreground, and the sea makes a steady horizontal line behind the roof and walls. I left space above the house so the clouded sky could carry a different tone from the brighter wood. There is plenty of texture in the structure, but very little competing detail in the surroundings. That balance was what I wanted to keep: a close enough view to notice the worn boards and roof, with enough coast around it to show the place where the house stands.
