Repeated Steel Circles Receding Into the Distance
The wheels repeat until their individual shapes become a dense pattern. Large steel circles fill the foreground, with smaller overlapping rims continuing across the upper frame. I like how the photograph can look almost abstract at first, then become more specific as the hubs, axles and corroded surfaces come into view.
The nearer wheels have plenty of texture. Dark marks spread across their faces, pale worn edges pick out the rims, and the central fittings carry their own layered detail. Each wheel is similar in form, but the weathered surfaces vary enough to keep the repetition from feeling exact. The gaps between them create darker spaces that make the curved outlines easier to follow.
I photographed these rail car wheels in 2019. Black and white strengthens the relationship between the circular forms and their rough surfaces. The close viewpoint leaves the wider surroundings outside the frame, allowing the rows themselves to establish depth. I like moving from one large foreground wheel toward the smaller arcs farther back, where the machinery begins to read as a continuous rhythm.

From across a room, the repeated circles create the main impression; closer up, the rust marks and metal edges distinguish one wheel from the next.
