A Rural Portrait Among Haystacks And Farm Machinery
I made this black-and-white portrait in the Romanian countryside, where a woman stands beside a piece of farm machinery with her hand resting almost casually on its upright control. A long metal rod cuts horizontally through the lower frame while her patterned skirt, heavy jacket, and loosely tied headscarf bring texture and detail to the portrait. Behind her, large haystacks rise from the farm landscape, their softened forms repeating across the background.
What holds me in the photograph is her expression. She looks directly toward the camera without performing for it. There is no exaggerated smile or carefully arranged pose. Her face, the position of her hand, and the relaxed weight of her body give the photograph its character. For me, that directness is an important part of Romanian black and white photography, where the person and the surrounding environment can carry equal weight in the frame.
I deliberately kept enough of the farm around her to make this more than an isolated portrait. The machinery occupies a substantial part of the foreground, while the haystacks, wooden rails, trees, and rolling countryside gradually soften as they recede. Her face remains the visual center, framed by the lighter scarf and separated from the darker tones of her jacket. The extended arm then pulls my eye left toward the machinery before the landscape carries it farther into the photograph.
Black and white removes competing color and concentrates attention on expression, shape, clothing, weathered metal, and the layered gray tones of the rural setting. The photograph has the visual qualities I look for in an environmental portrait: a person who belongs naturally within the surroundings rather than appearing separated from them.
I offer this photograph as a limited edition of only 10 prints. Each print is personally signed by me and includes a certificate of authenticity. I print the photograph with archival pigment inks on premium archival paper, preserving the subtle midtones, facial detail, and darker textures that are essential to the image.
As wall art, I see this working particularly well in interiors where monochrome photography, rural subjects, and human-centered documentary imagery have room to breathe. It may also appeal to collectors drawn to Romania, traditional agricultural settings, environmental portraiture, and photographs that record ordinary people within the places where they live and work. Above all, this photograph belongs within my broader study of people and daily life photography.

Limited Edition of 10
This photograph is released as a signed and numbered limited edition of only 10 prints in total across all available sizes combined—not 10 prints in each size.
Every size is drawn from the same edition. Whether the photograph is purchased as a small print or at the largest available size, it uses one of the 10 edition numbers.
I personally sign and number each print on the reverse, and every print is accompanied by a signed Certificate of Authenticity recording its title, dimensions, medium, edition number, and date of issue.
Once all 10 prints have been sold, the edition will be permanently closed. No additional numbered editions of the photograph will be produced in another size or format.
Premium Archival Fine Art Prints
I personally produce every photograph using archival pigment inks on premium archival paper with a subtle luster finish.
The paper provides rich tonal depth, excellent fine-detail reproduction, and a refined surface that reduces distracting glare under normal indoor lighting. It is especially well suited to both color and black-and-white photography.
Each photograph is sold as an unframed fine art print, allowing it to be framed according to the collector’s space and personal style.
Before a print leaves my studio, I carefully inspect it for color, tonal accuracy, surface quality, and overall presentation. Nothing is outsourced, and every finished print passes through my hands.
