Breaking Waves Draw Pale Lines Around Dark Coastal Rocks
From above, the shoreline becomes a pattern of pale water and dark stone. At Kostbergan Beach in Norway, I photographed the surf breaking across rock formations, keeping the view close enough that there is no horizon. The subdued green water and grey rock give the white foam a strong place in the composition.
The waves enter from the upper part of the frame, then spread around smaller isolated rocks before meeting the larger formations below. I like the way their edges change as they reach the shore. Some areas form a broad white band; others thin into delicate branching lines across the water.
The lower rocks have a different kind of detail. Long ridges sit beside pockets of smaller rounded stones, creating a heavier texture beneath the moving surf. Their irregular arrangement gives the photograph structure without a single obvious centre. The eye can follow the edge of the foam or move through the shapes of the rock itself.
I wanted the aerial perspective to reveal how those two surfaces fit together. The water is soft and shifting, while the rock gives it boundaries and interruptions. The view remains specific to this Norwegian shore even when the shapes begin to feel abstract. Looking at it, I can move between the fine lines of foam and the heavier rock formations. The meeting of water and stone gives the photograph its rhythm.
