A Trail of Smaller Stones Toward the Sea
Small loose stones gather between the broad rock surfaces, creating a rough route through this Peggy’s Cove shore. Beyond them, low outcrops meet the water and the ocean settles into a level horizon. I like the way the foreground asks for close attention before the view opens into something simpler in the distance.
The rocks have several kinds of detail. Some surfaces are rounded and pale, with long dark cracks; others are broken into smaller pieces that cast deeper shadows. A shallow sandy patch lies near the lower edge, adding a softer texture among the stone. The water appears in gaps along the left and beyond the outer rocks, keeping the coast visible without taking over the picture.
I made this photograph in Nova Scotia in 2014. Black and white lets the individual rock forms remain clear, while a band of layered clouds gives the sky its own pattern. The contrast is gentle enough to preserve the finer grain on the stone. Moving from the scattered foreground pieces to the low offshore rock changes both the scale and the pace of looking.
