A Narrow Road Leading Toward the Desert Buttes
The road begins near the lower edge and draws a thin line toward the buttes. Around it, the land stays dark and open, while the sky holds a gentle orange glow. I like how the route gives this Monument Valley photograph a direction without taking attention away from the rock formations ahead.
The buttes have distinct outlines against the morning light. A larger flat-topped form anchors the right side, with narrower towers and broken shapes spread across the left. The foreground has quieter variations of brown and red, leaving the skyline easy to follow. There are no strong cloud patterns to compete with it; the gradual colour in the sky is enough to separate stone from distance.
I made this photograph in 2008. The low light keeps much of the landscape in shadow, but that restraint is part of its appeal. Small changes in the ground remain visible on a closer look, and the road becomes less prominent as it approaches the formations. It brings a sense of movement into a view that otherwise feels still.
