New York Protest Crowd Black and White Street Photography
Raised Signs and Individual Faces Fill the Frame
A raised placard makes a bold shape, but the faces beneath it keep bringing me back to this photograph. I made it during a New York City protest in 2017, working from within the crowd. That position gave me a close view of people carrying signs, lifting their arms and moving together through the street. The picture has the density of that moment, with figures filling almost every part of the frame.
The words are part of the scene’s visual rhythm. “Resist and Persist” appears beside a raised fist, while other signs read “Radical Inclusion” and “Black Lives Matter.” Above them, a larger banner and repeated lettering make a dark backdrop. I find the contrast between those strong graphic statements and the many individual expressions especially compelling.
Sunlight picks out shoulders, faces and the pale surfaces of the placards. Black and white brings these highlights into conversation with sunglasses, dark clothing and the deep areas between people. The square composition keeps the gathering close, encouraging the eye to move sideways from one person to another as well as upwards through the signs.
For me, street photography begins with paying attention to people in a particular place and moment. This image carries that sense of direct witnessing. As a photographic print, it offers both a record of a public demonstration and a layered study of gesture, typography and human presence in New York.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
