Gabled Facades and Moored Boats Mirrored Along a Quiet Waterfront
The canal reflects almost the entire row of buildings, carrying their windows and rooflines into the lower half of the photograph. Moored boats sit farther along the bank, with trees breaking up the closely spaced facades. I made this Haarlem image in 2024, drawn to the calm water and the way it seemed to return the city to itself.
The view opens toward the left, where the canal and shoreline become more distant. On the right, taller buildings give the scene a firmer edge. I like the balance between those two directions: the water invites the eye along the bank, while the repeated gables and window shapes encourage a slower look at the architecture.
Black and white brings the reflections close to the tones of the buildings above them. Small ripples soften the inverted shapes without breaking their connection to the waterfront. Trees, boats and cars remain part of the scene, keeping it tied to everyday city life. The stillness comes from the water and the composition rather than an absence of ordinary activity.
This horizontal photograph would suit a living room or office where a quiet urban view can add depth without strong colour. It combines the orderly detail of Dutch canal architecture with a softer mirrored surface. The more I look, the more I notice how each building contributes its own shape to the reflection, creating a second, gently altered version of the row.
