Bright Ice Held Between Dark Mountain Faces
The pale glacier draws the eye into a valley surrounded by sharp mountain forms. Dark rock rises on both sides, with snow following ledges and filling the high ground behind. I photographed this scene in 2011, and the contrast between the ice and exposed stone remains what gives the view its strength.
The mountains have very different profiles. On the left, steep faces and a pointed formation rise above the valley; farther back, a broken ridge sits above a broad snowfield. The right side brings another dark mass into the foreground. Together they frame the glacier without making the scene feel closed, because the clouds leave an open band above the peaks.
I like the detail that black and white brings forward. The ice has its own ridges and rough sections, while the rock shows long lines and patches of lingering snow. Nearer slopes appear darker and more textured than the high white basin. Following those changes gives the photograph depth, from the foreground mountains into the brighter distance.
