A Faded Station Sign Remains Beneath a Weathered Gable
The small “Currie” sign is still there beneath the gable. It gives this abandoned railway station in Nevada a precise identity, even as the building’s worn boards and the grass around it soften its presence. I photographed the scene in black and white, drawn to the station’s simple structure and the open desert setting beyond it.
A tree occupies much of the left side, partly covering the building and casting irregular shadows across its front. The station’s straighter lines remain visible through that tangle: a steep roof, narrow openings and two chimneys above. I like the contrast between the practical shape of the architecture and the less orderly growth around it.
To the right, a tall old windmill structure reaches well above the roof. Its small remaining rotor stands against the clouds, adding a vertical line to a view otherwise dominated by low buildings and distant land. A separate shed sits farther back, giving the photograph another layer of depth.
The sky takes up a generous part of the frame, with bright clouds passing across darker grey areas. That space keeps the station from feeling enclosed. My interest here is in what can still be read clearly: the name, the roofline and the arrangement of structures in the landscape. This print brings the weathered character of a Nevada ghost town into a room, with enough detail to look at slowly and enough open space to retain the quiet of the setting.
