Open Gables and a Windmill Beneath Sweeping Prairie Clouds
The weathered barn on the left and the slender windmill on the right give this Saskatchewan photograph two very different outlines. I framed them in black and white above a field of tall grass, with broken fence rails close to the camera. Across the sky, broad clouds connect the solid wooden structure with the open metal tower.
At the barn’s gable, missing boards reveal a dark opening and the framework within. The roof has a pale, uneven surface, while the horizontal siding forms a finer pattern below. A lower extension carries the shape toward the centre of the photograph. I wanted those changes in scale to remain visible, from the broad roof to the small openings in the wall.
The windmill stands apart from that heavier form. Its narrow legs and diagonal braces let the sky show through, making it feel lighter in the composition. Between the two structures, a line of fence posts recedes into the field. Closer to me, fallen rails lie at an angle in the grass, giving the foreground a direction of its own.
There was wind moving through the grass when I photographed this place. That movement was part of the experience, even though the image holds everything still. The monochrome treatment brings out the repeated lines in wood, metal and grass without separating them by colour. For me, the attraction is in that combination of rural shapes: a barn with a strong, worn outline, a fine tower, and a field that fills the spaces around both.
