Half Closed Eyes Beneath A Soft Crown Of Fur
That face was difficult to walk past. My wife and I had made a side trip to Cappadocia while exploring Istanbul, and in the Göreme valley we came across this camel standing still. I photographed it close and straight on, using black and white to concentrate on the long muzzle, soft fur, and partly lowered eyelids.
To me, it had the familiar look of someone at the end of a long day. That was my response to the expression rather than something I could know about the animal. I liked the small touch of humour it brought to the encounter, without needing a dramatic gesture or a wider view of the landscape.
The harness follows the length of the face, adding a narrow line through the softer texture. Dark ears stand out beside the pale crown, while the rocky background stays blurred. Around the shoulders, parts of the saddle and straps remain visible, keeping the portrait connected to the camel we found rather than making it an isolated face against an empty backdrop.
The detour gave me a photograph quite different from the domes and mosques we had been seeing in Istanbul. I still associate it with that unexpected stop: a close viewpoint, an animal that held still, and an expression that immediately made me smile. Monochrome preserves the texture and directness of the meeting, allowing the face to carry the image.
