Gdansk Abandoned Riverfront Tower Black and White Photography
A Brick Tower Facing Gdansk’s Industrial Waterfront
In 2013, I followed the waterfront in Gdansk without much of a plan beyond seeing what remained along its industrial edges. This tall brick building caught my attention from across the water. Its central tower rises above rows of windows, with metal arms extending from both sides and a small platform projecting from the front. My black and white photograph keeps the structure centred beneath a broad, clouded sky.
The repeated openings give the building a strong rhythm, though their different coverings and dark interiors interrupt that regularity. The brickwork carries a patchwork of tones, with pale areas around several windows and darker marks beneath the projecting fittings. At the base, an arched doorway sits just above the waterfront edge. Lower walls and partly open structures extend to either side, giving the tower its setting within a larger area rather than isolating it as a single architectural detail.
I included the water because its softer reflections change the balance of the photograph. Below the rigid façade and dock edge, the building becomes a broken pattern of vertical tones. The monochrome treatment brings the brick texture, window repetition and heavy sky together without losing that contrast. For someone interested in industrial architecture or abandoned urban places, the image offers a detailed record of a Gdansk waterfront scene as I encountered it. It also carries a specific memory from my visit, when an unplanned walk led me to this imposing structure and the quieter spaces around it.
