Illuminated Arches Along The Colosseum’s Curving Outer Wall
Light inside the Colosseum picks out rows of arches against the dark night sky in Rome. I photographed this view in 2010 and interpreted it in black and white, letting the illuminated openings describe the curve of the structure. The surrounding pavement remains quiet, keeping the architecture as the main presence in the frame.
The repeating arches give the image its rhythm, but they are not all equally bright. Some reveal inner walls and passageways; others remain deep dark shapes. I like how those differences prevent the repetition from becoming too regular. The building’s large outline is clear, while the details within it continue to change as the eye moves across the facade.
Above the arches, the upper wall becomes darker and less sharply separated from the sky. Below, gates and a low barrier introduce finer vertical lines. A small area of street lighting appears to the left, placing the landmark within the city without taking attention away from it.
I wanted the photograph to hold the Colosseum’s scale and its quieter surface details together. The monochrome treatment brings worn masonry, shadow, and artificial light into one tonal range. It offers a night view where the architecture is recognisable immediately, then becomes more intricate on closer inspection. For someone drawn to Roman landmarks and atmospheric architectural photography, the image gives a familiar subject a restrained, shadowed character.
