Glowing Windows Reappear Across the Wet Road After Dark
After the rain, the road gave me a second version of the buildings. Outside Paxton’s Head in Knightsbridge, London, bright windows and streetlights spread across the wet surface, making the reflections almost as compelling as the frontage itself. I used black and white to bring that glow together with the darker upper floors.
The pub sits among a row of shops and restaurants, with several different signs and window shapes sharing the view. I kept those neighbours in the frame because they show the pub within the street. Above them, bay windows and pale architectural details create a more regular pattern, while one bright streetlight punctuates the darker façade.
The site has housed licensed premises since at least 1632, but the building seen here dates to 1900–1902. That distinction gives the street its history without making the architecture older than it is. What held my attention on this evening was more immediate: the wet road, the lit windows and the way rain changed the balance of the whole scene.
The reflected building breaks into patches rather than forming a perfect mirror. Some areas remain dark, and others catch enough light to suggest the windows above them. I enjoy photographing cities when those temporary surfaces become part of the composition. This print carries a quiet London night into a room, with the pub’s warm-looking glow expressed through contrast rather than colour.
