Rural Cuba Open Air Garage and Bicycle Black and White Photography
A Broad Makeshift Roof Shelters a Crowded Repair Space
The broad roof is the first thing I notice in this rural Cuban garage. Supported by narrow posts, it extends over a crowded repair space and an open patch of ground. Beneath it, a bicycle stands among tools, shelves and assorted parts. I photographed the scene in 2010, drawn to the unpolished character of a place built around practical use.
There are many small details to explore: a fan near the left post, objects gathered on the back shelves, and larger panels resting outside the shelter. Trees and neighbouring buildings frame the workshop rather than separating it from daily life. I like how the photograph allows those surroundings to remain visible. The garage belongs to a wider place, and its open front lets the eye move easily between inside and outside.
Black and white brings order to the busy scene without making it look tidy. The pale roof spans darker beams, rough surfaces sit beside smooth panels, and the open foreground provides a little breathing room. What drew me here was a feeling of continuity, the sense of a space shaped by repeated work rather than designed to be admired.
This photograph would make an interesting addition to a workshop office, study or collection of travel images focused on everyday places. The horizontal composition offers both an overall view and plenty of close detail. It holds my attention through the ordinary things gathered under one roof.
