Dark Open Water Within a Snow-Covered Mountain Basin

During a stay in Ushuaia before traveling to Antarctica, I arranged a helicopter trip into the Martial Mountains. One stop brought me to this open basin between snowy peaks, where a small area of dark water remained visible within the pale landscape. I photographed the view in black and white, with the lake giving the wide mountain scene a distinct centre of interest.

The water forms a low, rounded shape in the foreground. Snow curves around its edge, separating it from the rougher ground nearby. I like how that smooth outline contrasts with the broken ridges beyond, whose peaks and exposed rock create a much more irregular rhythm.

Across the basin, snow follows the slopes in long channels and broader patches. The darker mountain surfaces remain visible between them, so the terrain reads clearly from one ridge to the next. A cloudy sky adds another layer of grey above the skyline without overwhelming it.

The viewpoint gave me room to include the lake and the surrounding peaks together. The open foreground leads into the basin, while the mountains wrap across the upper part of the frame. That arrangement helps the small body of water feel contained within a much larger landscape.

For me, the photograph preserves a particular stop on that journey through southern Argentina. For someone who enjoys remote mountain scenery, its appeal is in the balance of scale and detail: a quiet pool of open water, sweeping snow, and rugged peaks holding the view around them.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
