Barber Poles Frame A Quiet Interior Street Scene
I photographed this scene in Santa Marta, Cuba, looking through the open entrance of a small barber shop. An older man stands almost perfectly centered in the doorway with his back toward me, one hand pulling lightly at the bottom of his shirt while the other holds a cigarette. His pale clothing immediately separates him from the dark interior behind him.
What first attracted me was the structure of the scene. Painted barber poles appear on both sides of the entrance, creating an unusually strong frame around the doorway. The weathered plaster, chipped lower walls, handwritten business hours, patterned tile floor, bicycles, and men gathered inside give the photograph layer after layer of visual information. This is what I enjoy about black and white street photography: a simple moment can become much more complicated the longer I look at it.
The symmetry of the exterior is interrupted by everything happening inside. The central man is still, but the shop behind him feels active. One man stands beside a bicycle, another sits farther inside and looks directly toward the camera, while additional figures recede into the shadows. I especially like that contrast between the ordered architecture and the irregular arrangement of people and objects.
Black and white keeps my attention on gesture, texture, light, and spatial depth. The bright exterior walls lead into a much darker room, while the man's shirt becomes the tonal bridge between the two. I left much of the shop interior deliberately deep in shadow because I wanted the details to emerge gradually rather than reveal themselves all at once.
I print this photograph using archival pigment inks on premium archival paper. It is offered as a limited edition of only 10 prints, with each print personally signed and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.
I see this photograph working particularly well for collectors drawn to documentary street photography, Cuba, weathered architecture, and unposed human moments. Its strong geometry gives it presence from a distance, while the smaller details inside the shop reward closer viewing. It also belongs naturally within my broader collection of Cuba wall art.

Limited Edition of 10
This photograph is released as a signed and numbered limited edition of only 10 prints in total across all available sizes combined—not 10 prints in each size.
Every size is drawn from the same edition. Whether the photograph is purchased as a small print or at the largest available size, it uses one of the 10 edition numbers.
I personally sign and number each print on the reverse, and every print is accompanied by a signed Certificate of Authenticity recording its title, dimensions, medium, edition number, and date of issue.
Once all 10 prints have been sold, the edition will be permanently closed. No additional numbered editions of the photograph will be produced in another size or format.

I personally produce every photograph using archival pigment inks on premium archival paper with a subtle luster finish.
The paper provides rich tonal depth, excellent fine-detail reproduction, and a refined surface that reduces distracting glare under normal indoor lighting. It is especially well suited to both color and black-and-white photography.
Each photograph is sold as an unframed fine art print, allowing it to be framed according to the collector’s space and personal style.
Before a print leaves my studio, I carefully inspect it for color, tonal accuracy, surface quality, and overall presentation. Nothing is outsourced, and every finished print passes through my hands.
