Tuscan Window With Shutters and Potted Plants Colour Photography
Small Green Plants Within a Weathered Italian Window
The small pots on the sill give this window its particular character. I photographed it in Tuscany, Italy, where two open wooden shutters frame a dark interior and a compact group of green plants. Their colour is a quiet but distinct part of the scene, set against warm plaster, exposed brick and worn wood. I like how much there is to notice within such a modest opening.
The shutters bring a regular pattern to either side of the window. Their narrow horizontal slats contrast with the wall’s much less even surface. Areas of plaster have worn away to reveal brickwork, and the different tones around the opening make its edges easy to follow. The sill carries another small band of texture beneath the pots.
Above the window, curved roof tiles overlap in repeated rows. Some retain warmer reddish tones, while others have darker surfaces and green patches of growth. I kept that portion of the roof in the photograph because it gives the window a wider architectural setting. The gutter forms a horizontal division between the tiles and the wall below.
For me, the appeal lies in the meeting of these larger repeated forms and the small, individual plants. The shutters and tiles give the image order; the pots interrupt it with different shapes and fresh green colour. The interior stays in shadow, allowing the sill and surrounding surfaces to remain the focus. I wanted to keep the photograph close to what caught my eye: an ordinary Tuscan window with enough colour and texture to reward a slower look.
