Dubrovnik Old Town Terracotta Rooftops Colour Architectural Photography
Overlapping Tile Ridges, Chimneys and Small Roof Windows
Terracotta roofs fill the frame in a close patchwork of slopes and ridges. I photographed this view over Dubrovnik’s Old Town in 2020, drawn to the way the warm tiles repeat across neighbouring buildings. Each roof has its own angle, and their overlapping edges create a dense arrangement with small openings, chimneys and pale walls tucked between them.
The central building gives the eye a clear place to begin. Its light wall rises beneath a tiled peak, with shutters on one side and a small window set into the adjoining slope. I like how those details interrupt the repeated rows of tiles. Further back, chimney stacks and roof windows add upright and rectangular shapes among the long diagonals.
Colour connects the scene while keeping its variations visible. Some roofs are bright orange in the light, others lean towards deeper red or brown, and a darker section creates a distinct patch near the left. Pale stone and plaster offer quieter areas between those warm surfaces.
For me, this photograph finds Dubrovnik’s character in a close architectural pattern. The roofs have a strong collective shape, yet a careful look reveals the separate buildings and the details that belong to each. As a colour print, it brings warm Croatian city tones into a wall display, with a tightly filled composition that rewards both an overall view and a slower exploration of tiles, chimneys and windows.
