Prague Old Town Square From Above Black and White Photography
Patterned Pavement Beneath Ornate Facades and Steep Roofs
Dark lines divide the pale pavement into a striking grid in this elevated view of Prague’s Old Town. People cross the patterned surface in small groups or on their own, their figures giving scale to the buildings above them. I made the photograph on location from a real vantage point overlooking the scene. The height brings the paving, rooflines and street activity into one composition, allowing their relationships to become especially clear.
The facades occupy the upper part of the frame, with rows of windows, curved decorative edges and steep tiled roofs. Their many vertical details meet the strong diagonals of the view below. I enjoy how the pavement’s pattern changes across the scene, from longer bands on the left to a tighter arrangement beside the road on the right. The black and white treatment links these different surfaces through light and dark rather than colour.
Cafe canopies sit against the buildings, and a line of vehicles follows the road’s edge. Those ordinary elements help keep the view connected to a working city. The people are small enough to become part of the pattern, yet remain visible as individual figures moving through the square.
For me, the appeal is the balance between architectural detail and open space. This print rewards both a distant view of its geometry and closer attention to the facades and pavement. It would suit someone drawn to Prague, European city views or photography with a strong graphic structure.
