Trinity College Library Books And Ladder Black And White Photography
A Wooden Ladder Breaks The Rhythm Of Bookshelves
The ladder is what makes this library photograph for me. Its long wooden sides cut across the steady horizontal lines of the shelves, leading the eye upward through rows of worn book spines. I photographed this close view at Trinity College in Dublin, choosing a small section of the library rather than the full interior.
There is a great deal to discover within that limited space. Some books stand tall and tightly packed; others sit lower, with uneven tops and bindings that differ in thickness. Faint lettering and raised bands bring individual character to the rows. The shelves impose order, but the books resist becoming a uniform pattern.
Black and white allows those differences to remain the centre of attention. Light touches the curved spines and the face of the ladder, while the recesses between volumes become narrow strips of shadow. The strong diagonal gives the image movement without disturbing its settled, thoughtful mood. I enjoy how something so useful can also provide such a clear compositional line.
Made in 2019, this photograph reflects my interest in places where everyday objects hold visual evidence of long use. I do not need to read every title to find the scene absorbing; the surfaces offer their own reason to pause. It is a natural choice for a reading nook, home library or study, especially for someone who loves books as physical objects as well as the stories they contain.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
