English Brick House Windows and Chimney Black and White Photography
Pale Window Frames Beneath a Tall Brick Chimney
The windows repeat across this English brick house in two different rows. I photographed the upper part of the building, keeping the roof and tall chimney within the vertical frame. The lower windows have rounded tops, while those above are straighter and more regular. Their pale frames stand out against the darker brickwork, making the pattern easy to follow from one opening to the next.
I was interested in the smaller variations within that repetition. The window divisions change between the two levels, and the brick arches above them create their own narrow curves. Horizontal bands across the façade connect the openings, while the individual bricks add a finer texture. The black and white treatment brings those differences together through tone rather than colour.
Above the main wall, a single dormer breaks the sloping roof. Its curved top relates to the windows below, but its position sets it apart. Behind it, the large chimney rises against a relatively plain sky, with several chimney pots grouped at the top. I like how this heavier vertical shape balances the repeated smaller windows.
The photograph is deliberately a view of architectural details. I kept the ground and surrounding street outside it so the eye could stay with the façade, roof and chimney. What appeals to me is how much variety a regular building front can contain: straight lines and curves, bright frames and textured masonry, repeated openings and one substantial form above them.
