A Weathered Trunk Beneath Gold Foliage and Wispy Clouds
Gold leaves gather on one side of the cottonwood, while bare limbs reach high into the blue sky. The uneven balance is what holds my attention. This desert tree has a thick, deeply textured trunk, but much of its colour sits on a lower branch that stretches away from it.
I included the ground and the low red-rock ridge rather than isolating the tree against the sky. Dry grasses, scrub, and scattered wood place the cottonwood within its surroundings. The warm earth tones echo the leaves, while the blue above provides a much cooler contrast. Fine white clouds spread through the open space between the upper branches.
The tree’s form becomes more interesting as you follow it upward. Its trunk bends and divides into irregular limbs, some carrying only small patches of foliage. Dark bark and knots remain visible even from a distance. I like the way that rough structure stands beside the softness of the autumn colour without either becoming secondary.
The vertical composition gives the cottonwood enough room to show both its height and its sideways reach. It also keeps the view anchored in the desert floor, where the colour is more subdued. The photograph is less about a perfect tree than a particular one: an asymmetrical shape, a bright cluster of leaves, and a weathered surface that becomes clearer the longer you look.
