Ivy Covered Stone Beneath an Open Bell Tower
An open bell tower rises above ivy-covered walls and weathered headstones in this black and white photograph from Cahir, Ireland. I made the image in 2019, drawn to the way vegetation spreads across the ruined church while its stonework still gives the scene a strong shape.
Two pointed openings near the top of the tower let the pale sky through. Below them, the wall becomes increasingly difficult to separate from the leaves and stems covering it. I framed the building from the graveyard, bringing a row of differently shaped headstones into the foreground. Their upright forms repeat the tower on a smaller scale.
The square composition holds that upward movement without excluding the grass at the base. Dark foliage gives weight to the left side, while clouds leave more open space around the tower. In monochrome, the texture of the stones, the mass of ivy and the markings on the headstones become parts of the same tonal landscape.
I found the meeting of ruin and growth compelling here. The church remains recognizable, but its edges soften where plants take over. Rather than assigning stories to the people commemorated in the graveyard, I wanted to show the place as I encountered it. The photograph offers a quiet, detailed study of Irish architecture and its surroundings, with enough contrast to hold attention across a room.
