Weathered Timber and Wire Fences Beneath a Rugged Mountain
The snowy lane carries this photograph towards the mountain before the eye returns to the barn. I made the image in Flakstad, Norway’s Lofoten Islands, with the weathered building on the left and the open path beside it. Faint red timber, grey boards and white snow give the rural landscape a restrained palette.
The barn has a long, practical shape, with a high gable and a lower section extending to the right. Its different surfaces show through clearly: faded paint, bare wooden boards and a ribbed roof with a small patch of snow. I was drawn to that variety because it gives the building character without needing to call it abandoned or imagine its history.
Wire fences run along both sides of the lane. Close to the camera, their thin lines break up the white foreground; farther back, the posts become smaller and lead towards the foot of the mountain. Above them, dark rock and snow form a much stronger texture, with steep gullies and a broad summit occupying most of the background.
I like how the scene brings those scales together. The barn and fences are close, familiar shapes, while the mountain changes the sense of everything around them. As a horizontal print, it offers a winter countryside view for a room with natural materials and quiet colours. For me, the lasting detail is the lane’s open white space, giving the weathered building and rugged slope enough separation for each to remain distinct.
