Chicago Art Deco Facade at Night Wall Art

Illuminated Stone Piers Form a Strong Repeating Rhythm

Light rises along a row of stone piers, separating them from the dark windows of this Chicago office building. The facade becomes a repeating sequence of bright vertical surfaces and deep shadow. I photographed the architectural detail at night in 2011, using a close view to concentrate on that rhythm.

The angle matters as much as the lighting. Rows of windows climb diagonally across the frame, while the taller stone divisions stretch toward its upper edge. Near the middle, the illuminated projections create a stepped line that cuts across the building. Their pale faces appear especially clear against the nearly black area below. Small lights inside a few windows offer another scale of detail within the larger pattern.

I am interested in how a building can become almost abstract when the surrounding street is left out. Here, the facade still has recognisable windows and stonework, but the eye first reads lines, intervals, and changes in brightness. The black-and-white treatment strengthens those relationships. It also brings out the subtle surface markings on the lit stone without distracting from the overall arrangement.

This print offers a concentrated view of Chicago’s Art Deco architecture rather than a skyline scene. Its strong contrast and repeated geometry give it a natural place in an office, study, or contemporary room. From farther away, the band of light provides the main impression; a closer look reveals the individual windows and the smaller differences within the repeating facade.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
