Wet Rails Lead Past Glowing Windows Into the Mist
I waited for the tram to settle into the space between the buildings. On this rainy night in Oslo, Norway, the wet street and glowing shop windows gave me the setting, but the tram gave the photograph its centre. In black and white, it becomes a small, solid presence among long lines of light and shadow.
The rails enter from the bottom of the frame and carry the eye toward the distance. Along the right side, a row of tall arched windows lights the pavement beneath a much darker facade. Streetlamps hang above the road, their light spreading into the mist and growing smaller as they recede.
I was watching for the point when those separate elements felt balanced. The tram sits just off centre, close enough to see its front windows, with plenty of street around it. That surrounding space is part of what interested me. The building fronts have a strong rhythm, while the damp surface below gathers their light into softer marks.
The evening felt quiet without being empty. There is still a vehicle moving through the scene and light behind the glass, but the mist limits how far I can see. I wanted to keep that combination: an ordinary city journey happening inside a subdued night landscape. The photograph holds the tram clearly while letting the rest of Oslo gradually fade into the distance.
