Empire State Building Beneath a Heavy Manhattan Sky
New York has a way of looking permanent until I go back through older photographs. This view of the Manhattan skyline, made in 2009, now feels like a record of the city at a particular moment. The Empire State Building rises on the right, while a dense wall of towers fills the frame beneath a heavy, unsettled sky.
What caught me was the compression of the skyline. From across the water, the buildings seem packed together almost without space between them, creating a layered study of New York architecture rather than a single landmark portrait. The small boat crossing the foreground gives the scene scale and keeps the city from becoming completely static.
Black and white suited the weather and the structure of the photograph. The clouds have real weight, the water carries a rough texture, and the buildings break into hundreds of windows, vertical lines and dark geometric blocks. Without colour, my eye moves between those patterns more easily, eventually landing on the familiar profile of the Empire State Building.
The year matters here. Manhattan is always changing, and skyline photographs gradually become documents whether that was the original intention or not. I like that tension in this image: it is clearly New York, immediately recognizable, yet it also belongs to a version of the city that existed in 2009. For me, that makes the photograph more interesting with time, not less.
