Low Sun Above the Hudson River Waterfront
The low sun turns the sky orange while the waterfront below remains in deeper tones. I photographed this aerial view of New Jersey from above the Hudson River in 2017, looking across the water toward a dense cityscape stretching to the horizon. The bright sky and quieter river give the buildings between them a clear place in the composition.
From this height, the shoreline becomes a strong organising line. Towers gather near the water, piers reach outward, and the tighter grid of streets and rooftops continues inland. Small boats punctuate the broad river surface. I like being able to see the city’s overall shape while still finding details that suggest its daily movement.
The light makes that structure feel less rigid. Warm colour spreads through the clouds and touches the water near the sun, while the buildings fall into a darker band. Farther away, the city becomes a softer texture. That gradual loss of detail gives the view depth and keeps the foreground waterfront distinct.
Flying along the river offered a perspective I could not have found at street level. For me, the photograph brings together two interests: the patterns made by a city and the changing light around them. As wall art, it offers a broad urban view with a warm colour accent. It can suit a contemporary living room or office, particularly for someone connected to New Jersey, the Hudson waterfront or aerial photography.
