Turquoise Ice And White Ridges In A Repeating Pattern
At this close distance, an iceberg becomes a pattern of blue hollows and white ridges. The bands rise diagonally across the photograph, each one similar to the next but never quite repeated. A small strip of darker water at the bottom gives the scene a place and scale, while most of the image belongs to the ice itself.
I photographed this detail in Antarctica in 2011. The strong turquoise colour caught my attention, but the edges are what keep me looking. They are uneven and softly rounded, with little notches, shallow pockets and changes of thickness. Some surfaces look almost smooth; others carry delicate marks that become clearer as the eye follows a ridge.
There is an interesting balance between order and variation here. From a distance, the diagonal lines form a steady rhythm. Closer up, that rhythm breaks into countless small differences. I like photographs that can work at both distances, offering a clear arrangement across a room and more particular details when you come nearer.
