Gdansk Brick Building and Dormer Windows Black and White Architectural Photography

Contrasting Facades Beside A Curled Street Lamp

A tall brick facade rises beside a lower building with a broad tiled roof and dormer windows. I photographed these neighbouring buildings in Gdansk, Poland, on an overcast day in 2013. The difference between their surfaces is what holds my attention: closely patterned masonry on the left, then a plainer wall marked by pale window frames on the right.

The brick building has a strong vertical rhythm. Narrow sections climb toward the uneven roofline, with recessed windows and darker openings breaking up the texture. Beside it, the sloping roof extends across much of the photograph. Its repeated tiles provide a horizontal pattern, interrupted by two projecting dormers and the shapes rising behind the ridge. The buildings seem to answer each other through these contrasting lines.

A street lamp stands in front of the join between the facades. Its curled support adds a small, graceful shape against the straighter architecture. At street level, worn plaster, pavement and a narrow strip of road bring the view back to everyday surroundings. Bare branches enter from the right, softening the outer edge of the building without concealing its windows.

I chose black and white for the way it brings these textures together. The pale sky leaves the rooflines clear, while the soft light reveals detail across both walls. This vertical architectural photograph offers a quieter view of Gdansk, with interest concentrated in neighbouring facades rather than a broad city view. It belongs with an appreciation for Polish streets, brickwork and the small differences that give urban buildings their character.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
