Spanish Moss And Cypress Trunks Above Silver Water
Two broad cypress trunks emerge from a pale layer of fog, their flared bases meeting water that seems almost as soft as the air. Long strands of Spanish moss hang around the branches, and more trees disappear into the background. This is the kind of quiet scene at Caddo Lake that makes me slow down and look at the spaces between things.
I photographed it on a late November morning in 2021. During that week, this was the only morning the lake offered this fog. The mist softens the lower trunks and keeps the background from becoming too busy, while the nearer bark remains full of fine vertical ridges. Small ripples cross the water beneath the trees, interrupting their reflections just enough to keep the surface alive.
Monochrome draws those textures together. The moss forms a delicate curtain, the branches stretch in darker lines, and the bases of the trees carry the strongest tones. I like how slowly the scene reveals itself: first the two trunks, then a smaller tree between them, then the more distant forest. There is no single hard boundary between water, fog and woodland.
