White Snow And Rust Red Earth Among Desert Trees
Snow traces the branches before it covers the ground. In this Monument Valley photograph, the white dusting makes the twisting limbs especially clear, while patches of red earth remain open between the trees. The scene has winter light and colour, yet the desert is still very much present.
I photographed this landscape in 2010. What interests me most is the mix of surfaces: fine snow on rough bark, olive green foliage beside pale grass, and warm sandstone beyond the trees. The largest tree spreads across the right side, with smaller trunks and branches forming a loose pattern through the middle. Behind them, low orange cliffs give the eye somewhere to rest.
A cloudy sky opens into blue above the rock. That patch of colour keeps the scene light, and the uneven snow allows the warmth of the ground to show through. Looking closely, the trees have very different shapes. Some are full and rounded; others are mostly a tangle of bare limbs. Together they make a landscape that feels particular and lived in by nature, rather than reduced to a single dramatic landmark.
This winter desert wall art would sit comfortably with natural wood, warm white walls or muted green furnishings. Its appeal lies in that meeting of seasons and colours: rust red soil, soft white snow and the persistent green of the trees. For someone who enjoys quieter Southwestern landscapes, it offers a scene to return to slowly, following one branch or patch of light at a time.
