Gobi Desert Sand Ripples Black and White Abstract Photography
Low Light Across Repeated Sand Ridges and Dark Troughs
Low morning light draws dark lines between the wind-shaped ridges of the Gobi Desert in this black and white photograph. I framed the sand closely, allowing its repeated curves to fill the view. The brighter crests and shaded troughs give a fine surface a strong graphic pattern, with no horizon to interrupt it.
The ridges bend and divide as they travel through the frame. Some form longer, nearly parallel bands; others break into shorter curves and small enclosed shapes. Near the foreground, their edges are distinct enough to show the grain of the sand. Farther away, the same pattern tightens into a denser arrangement of light and dark. The repetition holds the picture together, while the small changes keep it from becoming a uniform set of lines.
I photographed this during my travels through southern Mongolia in 2023, using a tripod to work with the subtle differences in tone while the sun was still low. The sand felt very fine underfoot, but it was the contrast between ridge and hollow that held my attention. I stayed with that close view rather than widening to the surrounding dunes. Monochrome makes the shadow pattern direct without losing the smaller textures along the lit crests. For me, the image records a particular morning surface shaped by the wind: something clear enough to follow closely, yet temporary within the larger desert. It brings the landscape into view through its smallest repeated forms.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
