Bare Trunks Stand Before a Snow Laden Forest
A frozen wetland becomes almost weightless under fresh snow. In this Haliburton photograph, bare standing trunks rise from a white basin while a dense forest gathers behind them. I was out exploring after an early snowfall, and the contrast between those isolated trees and the snow-laden woodland made me stop.
Places that seem ordinary through the warmer months can change completely in winter. Here, the open ground becomes a broad, clean surface, and the sky offers another area of pale space above it. Between them, the forest forms a textured band, giving the photograph structure without filling every part of the frame.
The tallest bare trunk stands to the left, reaching well above the tree line. Smaller trunks repeat its vertical direction across the foreground. Behind them, the evergreen branches carry enough snow to soften their outlines while preserving the density of the woods. I like the difference between those spare upright forms and the more complicated living forest.
Black and white keeps the view with shape, space and subtle tone. The composition has a minimalist character, but it still holds the specific details of an Ontario wetland in winter. Haliburton has been the setting for some of my most personal photographs, and this scene reflects the quiet structure I keep finding there. It offers a restrained winter print for someone who enjoys open space, snowy woodland and a landscape that reveals itself gradually.
